Local and state officials on Friday helped celebrate the construction of six houses by MidAmerica Housing Partnership (MAHP) of Cedar Rapids, the first of approximately 50 the agency plans across Iowa.

MAHP is using $280,000 from the Helping Iowa’s Rural Economy (HIRE) fund for a down payment and closing costs to help families buy the homes.

Among those at Friday’s ceremony were Mayor Jim Rhinehart and U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.

Depending on family size and income, up to $25,000 in down payment assistance and $900 in closing costs are available from the HIRE fund.

MAHP also is working on housing developments in Grinnell, Deep River, Marengo, Washington, Central City, What Cheer and Victor.
